commuter rail
–noun
a passenger train that is ridden primarily by passengers who travel regularly from one place to another

Commuter rail may be the most common form of rail transit in the world and has many different types including diesel, electric, mag-lev, etc. This form of transit typically used for greater distances than other forms of mass transit so that costs can be kept to a minimum and an even greater amount of passengers can use the service. These systems typically extend past the county that the core city resides in and is used by those living in the far suburbs that need transportation to work.

The typical range for this type of transit extends from 9 miles to 111 miles with a maximum speed of 110mph. Because of the distances, service along these lines is much more infrequent than that of other types of mass transit.
